Vehicle imports through Colombo if for immediate clearance

All merchant Vessels, especially roll-on roll-of Vessels, carrying vehicles consigned to be driven out of the port immediately, would be allowed to call at the Port of Colombo even after the deadline of Thursday May 31, while all other Vessels should be diverted to Magam Ruhuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota.

At Hambantota there were yard facilities to park between 5,000 and 7,000 vehicles at any given time, Chief Engineer of the Hambantota port Agil Hewa Geegana said.

He said that members of Vehicle Importers’ Association had voluntarily consented to discharge all their vehicle imports at the Hambantota port after Thursday’s, following the meeting they had with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other SLPA officials.

Geegana also said that negotiations between officials of the SLPA and the Ministry of Economic development and several investors, who were willing to make Foreign Direct Investments to set up on shore industrial plants for processing raw materials for export, were in the final stages with agreements scheduled to be signed shortly.

Among them were projects to import clinker in rock form to be crushed and turned into cement for export, fertilizer in raw formto be mixed and packed for export, molasses in liquid form for conversion into sugar, and to process Petro chemicals into granules for manufacturing plastic gallons for export.
