Govt to finalize construction of first phase of Colombo-Kandy highway in two months

The government is to finalize the construction of the first phase of the Colombo-Kandy highway in two months.

Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera says that the first phase of the highway would be from Kadawatha to Mirigama and the segment up to Mirigama has already been cleared.

He has observed that the government is now studying the expressions of interest (EoIs) received for the highway.

The 98 kilometer Colombo-Kandy highway is to be extended to cover areas of the North as well.

"The Colombo-Kandy highway will be extended and would become the Northern Expressway similar to the Southern Expressway covering the South," Dr. Jayasundera has said.

He has noted that the Colombo-Kandy highway would be connected to Trincomalee and the North.

The government accordingly intends to commence construction work of the highway this year in order to complete it in four years.
