The government is developing infrastructure in the Northern Province to set up massive Industrial Zones within an year.

The Paranthan saltern will also be recommenced to produce salt within a short period, Northern Governor Major General G A Chandrasiri said.

The Governor said the development of infrastructure in a few Industrial Zones in Actchuveli, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar and Vavuniya has already begun.

He said the effort is a result of the government - private sector partnership.

The Governor said in one Industrial Zone initiated under President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s direction, a company has begun training 1,000 new recruits from the area to commence production once the construction of the factory is completed.

A few multi-national companies operating in Sri Lanka have begun development work at their sites in the Industrial Zones. They will commence garment factories, food processing centres, etc soon , Chandrasiri said.

He said any company whether local or foreign could initiate their industries in any of these Industrial Zones.
