The government will take streamlined action to protect women who are migrating overseas for employment, Minister of Child Development and Women's Affairs Tissa Karalliyadda said. According to the Minister an island wide programme will be launched to enlighten people to the importance of seeking employment only through licensed employment agencies and the dangers of sending underage women overseas for employment.
The programme will be launched with the cooperation of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau.
The Minister has noted that the authorities have received information that women going for employment in Korea, Malaysia and Singapore are being misused by certain groups which are only interested in money.
The Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau has recently decided to suspend deals with 609 foreign employment agencies alleged of malpractices.
