Political parties preparing for PC elections

Political parties are preparing nominations lists for the upcoming elections in three provincial councils.

Nominations for the elections in Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, and North Central Provincial Councils will be opened July 12 and will continue till July 19.

The government recently dissolved the three provincial councils before their terns were to expire.

The main constituent party of ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will hold interviews to select the candidates on July 06, SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said.

Meanwhile, the working committee of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) will meet on July 05 to take the final decisions regarding the PC polls, UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake said.

According to Attanayake, the UNP will most likely contest the PC polls by itself without forming any alliances.

The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna meanwhile, has also decided to go alone at the polls as an individual party.
The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), a breakaway group of the JVP has said that it would not contest at the forthcoming provincial council elections.

FSP General Secretary Senadhira Gunathilaka told a press conference that the party was not boycotting the elections, but was going to engage in an alternative electoral process.

The major Tamil party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is reportedly awaiting the result of a court action on the early dissolution of the Eastern Provincial Council before taking any decisions about the election.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress has not yet reached a decision on whether the party would contest the Eastern Provincial Council election separately or as an alliance.

The All Ceylon Muslim Congress and Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal party (TMVP) have decided to support the ruling alliance UPFA.

The Election Commissioner has announced that the elections for the three provincial councils will be held 1st, 8th or 15th of September and the exact date will be decided after closing of nominations.
