The Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Harbor in Hambantota is slowly gathering momentum as a transshipment hub of vehicles, Sri Lanka Ports Authority says.
A vehicle carrier, CSAV RIO ILLAPEL MONROVIA with a load of 460 vehicles arrived in Hambantota port yesterday from Japan via Singapore and Chennai.
This is the fifth ship that arrived in the port since the vehicle import and export operations were shifted to Hambantota port from May 31 this year.
The port will commence reshipping of the vehicles to Middle Eastern countries on July 12.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority says that four more ships are scheduled to arrive in the port within the next few days.
The Ports Authority said that the Magampura Harbor is earning a high income as a result of the transshipment process.
