Sri Lanka has earned a considerable income from United Nations peacekeeping operations in other countries, Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasekara said.

According to Brigadier Wanigasekara Sri Lanka has earned in excess of 18.4 billion rupees from its peacekeeping operations around the world since 2004.

Sri Lanka is a committed partner for UN peacekeeping operations with a total of 1,215 men and women from the three Armed Forces and the Police currently serving in seven different peacekeeping missions.

Since 2004, Sri Lanka has had a deployment of 950 soldiers to the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). Another 200 peacekeepers serve in Lebanon. There are also military observers posted with the UN in African nations of DR Congo, Western Sahara and Sudan.

Since 2000, 12,210 army soldiers, 600 navy, 610 air force personnel and 572 policemen had served in the UN Peacekeeping forces. The country ranks at 22nd in terms of troop contributions to the UN peacekeeping.
