First dendro power plant in A’pura

 

The construction work of the country's first dendro power plant in Labunoruwa in Anuradhapura District has been completed.

According to the Project Development Engineer P R Wijewardane told the the Dendro (gliricidia plant) based power plant began feeding 500 kw to the national grid since last week.

He said that nearly 1,000,000 gliricidia new trees have been planted in the Thirappane DS division and 1000 forward sale contracts for gliricidia planting under alley cropping system were initiated under the Agriculture Ministry's Dry Zone Development and Partnership Programme.

The project is invested by Helios Thirappane Bio Power Project (Pvt) Ltd through Helios Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd and EVI, India, under the patronage of Thirappane based Human and Community Development Youth Organization (HCDYO).

The investment partner Helio Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd, India invested US$ 3.5 million for completing the 2.5 MW dendro based power plant, creating 100 rural jobs and 2000 farmers earning Rs 10,000 per month by selling wood to the power plant, Mr. Wijewardena said.

During the ongoing drought season more than 1000 farmers in the low income group had the opportunity to earn Rs 12 million in the last three months by selling gliricidia fuel wood to the plant.

Apart from the Thirappane power plant, the HCDYO, Labunoruwa in collaboration with the investors has planned to establish five new dendro based power plants at a cumulative capacity of 15.5 MW in Galenbindunawewa, Maha Wilachchiya, Horowpothana, Kahatagasdigiliya Divisional Secretariats.
