The Economic Development Ministry provided Rs 896 million to develop education facilities in the Sabaragamuwa Province. These funds are spent to launch 225 projects in the Sabaragamuwa Province.
Constructing half completed buildings, providing new buildings, completing estate school buildings and renovating school buildings in the Sabaragamuwa Province are included under these projects.
Meanwhile, the Economic Development Ministry will provide computer laboratories to 258 schools at a cost of Rs 135 million.
A special programme is also being implemented to develop rural schools which have less than 50 students in the Kegalle and Ratanapura Districts.
According to Education Ministry statistics, the Sabaragamuwa Province has the most number of schools which has less than 50 students. The Sabaragamuwa Province has around 1,108 government schools. Among them, 28 schools are under the control of the central Government. Out of these, 62 schools are Tamil medium schools while 25 Muslim schools are included in the Tamil medium schools. There are around 361,000 students and 22,000 teachers in schools in the Sabaragamuwa Province with the ratio of students to teachers being 14: 1. The national studentsí teacher ratio is 22:1.
