The Government has initiated a massive road development drive in Ampara in preparation for next year's Deyata Kirula exhibition which will be held to coincide with Independence Day celebrations on February 4.
According to the Minister of Ports and Highways, over Rs 3,000 million has been allocated for this project which includes the rehabilitation of main roads connecting different towns with Ampara city.
The reconstruction of 12 roads will be launched by Ports and Highways Deputy Minister today (Aug. 24) at Amapara town. Meanwhile, reconstruction of Varipathanchenai - Deegawapi road which will cost of Rs 264 million will commence tomorrow.
"We are rehabilitating the main, provincial and rural roads in the Ampara District. Rs 361 million has been granted to develop roads in Ampara," the Deputy Minister said.
Other ongoing road rehabilitation projects in the Ampara District include Airport Internal Road (Rs 166 million), Arasayady Malkampitiya Road ( Rs 320 million), Forest Road ( Rs 78 million), Sri Darnarathna Mawatha Road (Rs 115 million) and Uhana Maha Oya Road ( Rs 709 million).
The construction of the new bridge over Pallan Oya on the Right Bank Canal Road near Syphon Bridge will be implemented at a cost of Rs 786 million.
