Jetty at Vadamarachchi, Point Pedro, which has been prohibited from use for 14 years, was opened recently for fishermen in the area.

The security forces had prohibited the use of this jetty for fishing activities since 1998 due to the prevailing security concerns at the time. This had caused the fisher community in the area severe difficulties in engaging in their only livelihood.

Following the Vadamarachchi Fsheries Co-operative Society and the Fisheries Department bringing this to the notice of the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, the Minister had discussions with the relevant authorities and steps were taken to open this jetty for the fishing activities in the area.

This not only helps the fishermen be get engaged in their traditional livelihood but also enables to moor their boats safely during period of unfavorable weather and natural disasters.
