Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan hold first round of annual bilateral consultations


Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan have discussed a range of issues during the first round of annual bilateral consultations held recently at the Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo.

During the official visit of Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris to Kazakhstan in May, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding to hold regular consultations between the Ministries of External Affairs of Sri Lanka and Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

At the First Annual Bilateral Consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan held this week, the two countries have discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation further in the political, economic, cultural, and scientific and the educational fields.

The delegations of the two countries have reviewed the status of a number of bilateral agreements which are currently under negotiations.

The two sides also have discussed the preparations for the state visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Kazakhstan before the end of this year.

The Kazakhstan delegation led by the Director General, Asia and Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Aidarbek Tumatov have visited the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka and toured production facilities in Galle with the aim to increase bilateral trade.

Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs K. Amunugama led the Sri Lankan delegation which included senior officials from the Ministry of Economic Development, Department of Commerce, Export Development Board and the National Tourism Development Authority.

The Kazakhstan delegation included senior officials from their Ministry of Industry and New Technology, Tourism and Economic Development.
