Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister A.H.M. Athaullah told parliament that elections to the Puthukudiyiruppu and Maritime Pattu Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Mullaitivu District would be held under the old electoral system.

Elections to the two local government bodies were postponed until the area is cleared of landmines.

A clause to this effect has been included on the newly passed election law.
