The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal to establish a Consulate General in Melbourne. The Consulate General in Melbourne, proposed by the Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris, to provide services to the Sri Lankan community in Australia would cover the states of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
The Australian government has already agreed to the establishment of the Consulate General.
Melbourne has the largest Sri Lankan community concentration in Australia with a presence of nearly 80,000 to 100,000 Sri Lankans engaged in multiple fields including employment, education, trade, and investment.
