Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara said to take immediate action to resolve the language problems Tamil prisoners facing in their judiciary proceedings. The Minister said to appoint court translators and to conduct investigations and prepare crime sheets in Tamil language for the benefit of the Tamils remanded when he visited the Tamil remand prisoners at Colombo Magazine prison yesterday.
Some Tamil prisoners have pointed out that judicial proceedings pertaining to their cases are entirely in Sinhala language and the contents in the crime sheets and investigations have totally affected the Tamil accused.
The Minister said that special courts would be established shortly to streamline the judicial proceedings of the Tamil suspects who are related to the activities of LTTE.
The government in May this year had informed parliament that there were some 359 LTTE suspects in local prisons and 309 cases have to be heard.
