Construction of Kottawa terminal commences in December

The construction of the terminal of Kottawa end of Colombo-Galle Southern Expressway will be commenced in December.

The Kottawa terminal will comprise five entries and eight exits. The terminal also connects the Southern Expressway to the Colombo Outer Circle Expressway which is being built now.

The Southern Expressway will be connected to other expressways such as Colombo-Kandy Expressway and Colombo-Katunayake Airport Expressway via the Colombo Outer Circle Expressway.

The Ministry of Transport has already called for bids for widening the roads at the junctions between Kottawa and Colombo to minimize the traffic congestion, Deputy Minister of Ports and Highway Nirmala Kothalawala said.

At present, the traffic on High Level Road from Kottawa to Colombo frustrates the motorists.

The Southern expressway completes its first year on November 28. The toll road earned Rs. 950.9 million during this year while maintenance and operational costs of the road was Rs. 450 million.

Over 8,000 vehicles on a normal day and over 10,000 vehicles during weekend travel on the Southern Expressway.
Meanwhile, two expressways - Colombo-Katunayake Airport Expressway and the Outer circular road from Kottawa to Katunayake via Kaduwela which connects the Southern Expressway with Katunayake Expressway- will open next year for public.

Also the Southern Expressway will be extended up to Matara under its second stage next year.
