A multi – pronged program to combat child abuse is being implemented to provide urgent medical treatment, to investigate such cases and to pay special attention to the victims by the Ministry of Child Development and Women Affairs Police and the Ministry of Social Services. A seminar on this theme was conducted at Water’s Edge chaired by Mr.M.L.A.M Hisbullah Deputy Minister and Plan Lanka and the Association of Pediatricians.
Under the program action will be taken to prevent recurrence of abuse to the victims and urgent medical and psychiatric treatment steps will also be taken to give the custody of the victims to parents after legal action initiated . To prevent increasing number of child abuse it has been decided to set up Tribunals in every district to provide relief to victims and to prevent child abuse.
Attention will be paid to abandoned children as well activities of institutions involved in the field will be coordinated to raise awareness of child rights and rehabilitation of victims.
The Association of Pediatricians will play vital role in this initiative.
