The government is planning to construct an elevated highway from Colombo to Kottawa, the entry point to the Southern Expressway. The road will be built over the present High Level road which is heavily congested during rush hours, Deputy Minister of Ports and Highway Nirmala Kotelawala said.
High Level road connects the Southern Expressway to the Colombo city but the travelling from Kottawa to Colombo is extremely slow due to traffic jams. Also the widening of the High Level Road is not possible at some places.
The government has planned to build the elevated segment from Kottawa to the Baseline road at Kirulapone.
The Deputy Minister said that a feasibility study is underway. He expects the construction to commence in 2014.
