Court releases 40 Indian fishermen

A group of 40 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on December 04 while they were poaching in Sri Lankan waters in the eastern sea, were released by the Trincomalee Magistrate yesterday.

The Trincomalee magistrate has released them after ordering them not to enter the Sri Lankan waters again.

The fishermen told that they were unknowingly drifted in to Sri Lankan waters by the wind.

Trincomalee Magistrate released all the fishermen who were in remand without bail and ordered the police to take steps to move the fishermen's boats and equipment out of Sri Lanka's maritime borders.

Indian fishermen, mainly from Tamil Nadu, illegally poaching in large scale with trawlers in Sri Lanka's waters, have become a serious threat to the livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen.
