The government has appointed national and district committees to demarcate the electorates for the local government councils. The newly demarcated electorates will be used at the next local government election which is to be held as a mix of the first-past-the-post and the proportional systems. The national committee of demarcation of electoral boundaries chaired by Jayalath Ravi Dissanayaka comprises five senior public officials. P.H.G. Premasiri, Wimal Subasinghe, P.M. Nahiya and S. Athavan are the other members of the committee. The government has appointed 25 district committees to demarcate the borders of electoral areas of the local government councils of the districts. The district committee is chaired by the District Secretary and comprises officials from Election Department, Surveyor Department, Department of Demography and Statistics and a public official appointed by the Minister of Local Government. The district committees are assigned to make divisions, demarcate borders, name the councils and to consult the public. Public are invited for consultation until January 31.
