Full text of the message:
His Excellency Dilma Rousseff
President of the Federative Republic of Brazil
Excellency,
It is with sorrow and dismay that I learnt of the tragic loss of many lives in the fire that engulfed a night club in Santa Maria. I was also deeply distressed to learn that most of the victims were outstanding young scholars from the Federal University of Brazil.
The Government and the people of Sri Lanka join me in conveying our heartfelt and profound condolences to the bereaved families and offer prayers to those who have been severely injured in this disaster.
At this difficult hour, our thoughts are with you and the people of Brazil. I am confident that with the characteristic courage and fortitude of your people, they will be able to find solace to overcome their sorrow. The Government and people of Sri Lanka stand with you in solidarity as your country comes to terms with this tragic loss.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
