The Civil Defence Force which was formed to provide security to the border villages from the Tamil Tiger terrorists during the war, is now widely engaged in agricultural crop cultivation. According to government sources, the CDF has already cultivated over 10,500 acres engaging 35,000 civil defence personnel.
The revenues of these cultivations are credited to the Inland Revenue Department.
The Civil Defence Force is engaged around 900 agricultural projects including 3,800 acres of paddy cultivation, around 100 acres of cashew cultivation, other perennial and interim crops, animal husbandry, fish farming and mushroom cultivation.
