Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa Sunday declared open two drinking water supply systems in the North constructed under the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Northern Spring) program.
The two water towers, which can store over 2 million liters of water, at Adampan in Mannar District and Nedunkerni in Vavuniya District will provide clean drinking water to over 12,500 families in 16 Grama Seva Divisions.
The National Water Supplies and Drainages Board undertook the construction of the water supply system utilizing the funds allocated by the Economic Development Ministry for development and reconstruction programs in the North.
During their control, the LTTE has completely destroyed the water tower in Adampan in Mannar district.
According to the Ministry , the project at Adampan will provide drinking water to 5,860 people in the eight Grama Seva Divisions of Nadukkandal, Wedidayanmurippu, Adampan, Papamodeyi, Palayikul, Minukkan, Maligayikidal and Sonapuri.
The project in Vavuniya has replaced the old and dilapidated small drinking water supply system in Nedunkerni. The new project will supply drinking water to 6,734 people in the eight Grama Seva Divisions of Paddikudiirippu, Katikulam, Nedunkerni South and North, Olumadu, Mamadu, Kulavisuddan and Mareyi Ilappayi.
