Ranaviru month declared

President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared the month beginning from yesterday as the National Ranaviru Commemorative Month.

The month was declared at a function held at the Temple Trees with the pinning of first Ranaviru flag on the President by the daughter of Army Major KMUSK Udugama, who was killed in action on March 10, 2008 in Mannar.

The Ranaviru moth is declared to commemorate war heroes of the three armed forces and Police who perished and were injured in the three-decade long conflict that ended in May 2009.

Ranaviru commemorations will be held island wide until June 08th and the main national event will be held on May 18 at the Ranaviru Commemorative Statue in Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The victory parade will be held at the Galle Face Green on May 18 with the participation of soldiers of the armed forces and the officials of the police and the Civil Defence Force.

Proceeds from the last year's Ranaviru flag sales have been handed over to the President by the governors of the provinces. The proceeds will be used for the welfare of Ranaviru families.

Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne, commanders of the armed forces, provincial governors, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa also participated in the occasion.
