Sri Lanka Deputy HC in Chennai hands over Birth and Citizenship certificates

 

Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai handed over 353 Sri Lankan Birth Certificates and 567 Sri Lanka Citizenship Certificates for the Sri Lankan children living in Salem district,Remeshwaram, Virudunagar and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

The certificates were handed over by the Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai O.L. Ameerajwad to Shri B. Anand, IAS, the newly appointed Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Rehabilitation & Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils of the Government of Tamil Nadu during their meeting held on 7th May 2013 at the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation, in Chennai.

The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai has been conducting “Mobile Service Programmes” in various districts of Tamil Nadu to register the births of Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and living in the refugee camps. Following the registration of their births, citizenship certificates are issued. In the past, such mobile service programmes were conducted in Gummidipoondi, Madurai, Virudunagar, Rameshwaram, Cuddalore and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu. The Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission also conducted “Special Consular Service Programmes” to register the births of Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and are living in the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu, at the Chancery premises of the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai. More than 5,000 Sri Lankan birth and citizenship certificates have been issued for the Sri Lankan children who were born in Tamil Nadu and living in the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu by the Deputy High Commission for last four years.
