Sri Lanka is a nation on the rise - The Mirror

Sri Lanka is a nation on the up. The end of the war has meant itís safer to visit Ė and thatís exactly what people are doing as word gets around that itís a gem of a place, states The Mirror newspaper of the UK in a report published recently.

The likes of British Airways clearly think so because after 15 years of staying away they have returned, the newspaper adds.

The resurgent Sri Lanka is very evident in Colombo where money is being poured into building hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, the writer said.

But colonial-era buildings and street markets are still very much part of the cityís fabric and the new and the old sit comfortably together.

Itís also home to another of the islandís biggest attractions Ė The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, he explains.

Itís bath time when we arrive and we enjoyed the spectacle sipping coconut juice from a terrace overlooking the herd. You can get up close and very personal with the big beasts and as I stood next to one having my picture taken I felt very small indeed.
