President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday asked the Local Government representatives to keep the environment of their locals clean to save the environment and control deadly diseases like dengue from spreading.
At a function held to distribute equipment to Local Councils at the Presidential Secretariat, President Rajapaksa drew attention to the garbage problem confronted by the local governments and asked the Local Government members to adhere to the government's measure to sort the garbage and ensure proper disposal to control unwarranted environmental activities.
He emphasized that it was the obligation of everyone to build a healthy future generation and a beautiful country maintaining a clean environment.
President Rajapaksa commented that the task discharged by the Local Councils is valuable and to develop their areas with the support of the political leadership.
The President symbolically handed over tractors worth 195 million rupees to 132 Local Government Institutions and water bowsers worth 14 million rupees to four Local Councils for strengthening the water supply.
Minister A.L.M. Athaullah and Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake were among those present on the occasion.
