Govt takes measures to relocate Bogambara prison


A discussion on relocating Bogambara Prison in Kandy was held yesterday at Temple Trees with President Mahinda Rajapaksa presiding the meeting.

The relevant authorities discussed the problems that have arisen during the relocation alongside the Kandy city development programme with the President.

Prisoners from Bogambara Prison will be moved to a new prison complex built in Pallekele at a cost of 1.93 billion rupees.

The Pallekele prison can accommodate 3,000 inmates and it will be the largest prison in the island.

Prison relocation is a part of the government's plan to expand the prison network in the country and offer the inmates decent conditions according to international guidelines to serve their jail terms.

Minister of Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera, Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Chief Minister Sarah Ekanayake, President's Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath, Secretary to the Prison Reforms Ministry G.S. Vithanage, Prisons Commissioner Chandraratna Pallegama, and Secretary to the national heritage Ministry Dr. Nanda Wickremasinghe also participated in the discussion.
