President promotes Army Commander to General


President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has promoted Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya to the rank of General, to be effective retrospectively from 1st June 2013.

General Jagath Jayasuriya is the 19th Commander of the Army. He assumed office on 15th July 2009, months after the war against terrorism was brought to completion.

General Jagath Jayasuriya had been the Commander, Security Forces Wanni since August 2007 until he took over the mantle of the Army as the Commander. To his credit, General Jagath Jayasuriya was actively engaged in the overall military planning and operations in the Wanni until the end of Humanitarian Operation.

He has been appointed as Chief of Defence Staff with effect from August 01
Meanwhile, Major General Daya Rathnayake has been appointed as Commander of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 1st August while being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

Lieutenant General Rathnayake is currently the 43rd Chief of Staff in the Sri Lanka Army (since February 2010). He will become the 20th Army Commander of Sri Lanka.
