CHOGM 2013 official website launched

The Ministry of External Affairs Monday launched the official website of the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo in November this year.

The website, launched at a function held yesterday with Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris presiding, will provide information relating to the CHOGM 2013.

Prof. Peiris speaking at the occasion said that holding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka is a victory achieved by all Sri Lankans. He said that this is the first time an Asian country got the opportunity to host the Commonwealth summit after 24 years.

CHOGM 2013 will be the major international summit that will be held in Sri Lanka after the Summit of the Non Aligned Movement held in Colombo in 1976.

The Commonwealth Heads of State Summit will be held on the 15th, 16th and 17th of November at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo under the theme "Economic Development and Social Equality".

The Heads of governments and foreign ministers from 53 countries and high ranking officials will attend the November meeting.

Britain's Prince of Wales will open the summit in place of Queen Elizabeth, the head of the Commonwealth, who has curtailed her overseas commitments.

Meanwhile, all arrangements for the summit are being organized under the leadership of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne.
Minister Peiris said a committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga to oversee the comprehensive arrangements and 15 other committees have been appointed to look into the security, transport, media and other aspects.

Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella, Deputy Minister of External Affairs Neomal Perera, Secretary of Mass Media and Information Dr. Charitha Herath and Secretary of External Affairs K. Amunugama also participated in the website launching.

The social media platforms of CHOGM 2013 (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) were also launched to coincide with the launch of the official website.
