SLPA to expand East Container Terminal

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has planned to expand the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port to increase the container handling capacity.

Under the plans to develop the East Container Terminal, the SLPA will construct a 400 meter Berth in the East Container Terminal parallel to the construction of the South Container Terminal.

The cabinet of ministers has given the approval to the project proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as the Minister of Ports and Highways.

The Authority has a long term plan to complete the construction of both Colombo East and the West container terminals by 2020. Once completed the SLPA expects to handle 10 million TEUs monthly.

According to SLPA, the terminals will be developed with modern technology such as computerized terminal management systems. The use of latest technology will help to increase the throughput, vessel turnaround, productivity and the revenues of the Colombo Port.
