President Mahinda Rajapaksa sent congratulatory messages to several heads of state who have assumed power recently.
President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj was re-elected to a second four-year term last month. “The great services you have rendered for Mongolia and her people since the early stages of your political career, and the confidence reposed in you by the people of Mongolia are clearly manifested in your recent electoral victory,” President Rajapaksa wrote in his message to President Elbegdori.
The people of Iceland also went to the polls recently. “I have great pleasure in extending to you my warm congratulations on your appointment as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iceland,” President Rajapaksa said in his message to Prime Minister Sigmundur Davio Gunnlaugsson. “I am confident that the friendly relations that exist between our two countries will be further strengthened during your tenure for the mutual benefit of our peoples.”
Also in June, there was a transfer of power in Qatar as Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was named the new emir. “Sri Lanka and the State of Qatar have enjoyed close and warm relations for years, and these ties were further strengthened by the visit to Sri Lanka in January 2012 by your beloved father and my dear friend, the former Emir of the State of Qatar, and my visit to the State of Qatar in May 2012,” President Rajapaksa said.
