53 additional recommendations to be included in National Plan of Action


The Cabinet last week granted approval to incorporate an additional 53 recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report in the National Plan of Action.

These additional recommendations overlap other recommendations or form part of the recommendations contained in the National Human Rights Action Plan.

The Cabinet last week approved inclusion of these recommendations proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing, at the Information Department Auditorium, Government spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the government had set up the National Action Plan to implement 91 LLRC recommendations to be implemented through 22 state institutions.

According to the new Cabinet decision, 53 recommendations, including problems of international humanitarian law, human rights, welfare of detainees, internally displaced people and problems among the Muslim community in the Northern and Eastern Provinces had been added to the National Action Plan, Minister Rambukwella said.

The Minister said that the Cabinet had also approved the second phase of loans for rehabilitated LTTE cadres seeking self-employment in keeping with a proposal by Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera.

"The Cabinet has approved Rs. 525 million to provide loans to another 4,724 rehabilitated persons for self-employment projects" Minister added.
