Government has initiated a program to pay compensation to the residents of Northern Province affected by violence during the 30-year long conflict.
Under the first phase of the program, President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday symbolically handed over compensation to the families of people who lost loved ones and property and sustained injuries.
The first phase of the programme coordinated by the Rehabilitation Authority will hand over compensation to 1,200 people and the government has allocated Rs. 85 million for the purpose utilizing the funds allocated for year 2013 as recommended by the LLRC.
Senior Ministers A.H.M. Fowzie and Tissa Vitharana, Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera, Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, senior government officials and diplomats participated in the occasion.
