Students' Esala Perahara paraded streets of capital


For the third consecutive year the Students' Esala Perahara paraded the streets of Colombo yesterday, the Esala Poya day.

The Perahara with the participation of over 15,000 school students began at the Mahanama College in Colombo and paraded up to the Gangarama temple in Hunupitiya across the Temple Trees. President Mahinda Rajapaksa viewed the procession from the Temple Trees.

Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim students representing island wide schools presented their performances in the Perahara and around 500 Buddhist monks also marched in the procession.

Over 200 dancing troupes also performed in this event organized by the Education Ministry.

Ministers including Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and a large number of dignitaries and foreign delegates also attended to view the Perahara.
