Seize the opportunity to elect your own representatives President tells people in North

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa requested people in North to seize the opportunity and elect their own representatives in the upcoming Provincial Councils election.

Addressing a meeting with the editors of government and private media institutes of Sri Lanka, held today (30) at Temple Trees, President Rajapaksa said people in the North who were deprived of their democratic rights by the terrorists for more than three decades have already exercised their franchise at Presidential, General and Pradeshiya Sabha elections.

"Participating in a democratic process is a clear indication of new freedom they are currently enjoying," President added.

Expressing his views on fishermen issue in North and East, President said the latest trend is an organized act by certain interested parties who try to fish in the troubled water.

"Our people in North could not go fishing for a long time due to conflict. Now when they try to resume their livelihood, they have to face this new problem," said the President adding that Sri Lanka is always adhere to the policy of humane treatment for Indian fishermen who have detained by the Sri Lanka Navy for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Limit.

Speaking on Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), President said the Summit is an ideal opportunity for the world to witness Sri Lanka's progress since the end of the conflict.

Our country was once known as a land suffering from terrorism. Through CHOGM we can correct that notion, he said.

Member of Parliament Sajin de Vaas Gunawardene said advance teams from all 54 Commonwealth countries will visit Sri Lanka in August to apprise of the preparations for the Summit.

Secretary to the Treasury Dr. P. B. Jayasundara said 2013 CHOGM will be an ideal platform for the investors worldwide to harness immense investment opportunities that the country has to offer.
