After participating in the World Indigenous People's Day celebrations in Dehiattakandiya and Henanigala in EasternProvince Friday (August 09), President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the rural villages in the Central Province to meet the people and listen to their grievances.
The President visited Morayaya, Minipe and several other villages in Central Province and met with groups of people. During the discussions the public handed over their grievances to the President in writing.
President Rajapaksa visited the Morayaya Peripheral hospital to observe the health facilities there. He had a short discussion with the doctors and the staff and inquired into the patients' needs.
The President visited the Hasalaka area and laid a wreath on the monument of war hero Hasalaka Gamini Kularatne, the Sri Lankan soldier, whose supreme sacrifice saved the lives of hundreds of fellow soldiers when the LTTE sieged the Elephant Pass camp in July 1991. The President also visited the war hero's residence and spoke with his mother.
During the visits the President also met students who are taking the GCE A/L and Year Five scholarships examination and encouraged them to do well.
