Minister Rajapaksa and UK envoy discuss demining in North and CHOGM

The British High Commissioner in Colombo met with Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the Ministry yesterday (21) to discuss various issues.

The two sides, among other matters discussed progress of the demining program in the North and East, resettlement of displaced persons and development work in the North.

Minister Rajapaksa and Mr. Rankin also discussed the arrangements for forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka and the benefits it would bring to the participating countries.

The British envoy focused on the development programs the British Government has helped to launch in Sri Lanka and on new investments in the country.

The High Commission recently said that the UK has given over 20 million (3.8 billion Rupees) since the start of 2011 to help Sri Lanka's post-war recovery.

The UK government supports the HALO Trust charity in its demining work in the North. The charity contributes to the wider efforts to help ensure safety, security and a return to normalcy for all citizens of Sri Lanka.

The British High Commission's Head of Political Section Daniel Painter also participated in the discussions.
