Transparent ballot boxes to be used at today's election

The Election Department has taken steps to introduce new transparent ballot boxes instead of the traditional wooden boxes in selected polling centers.

The ballot boxes were imported from India and they are used as a pilot project, the Election Secretariat says.

The transparent ballot boxes will be used at the polling centers in the Northern Province at the Provincial Council election held Saturday.

They are also to be used in 46 polling centers in the Matale Municipality area.

The ballot boxes are to be delivered to the polling centers today under heavy police protection.

Police headquarters has decided to hand over the security of the counting centers to the elite Special Task Force (STF). Around 1,200 STF personnel will be deployed at the 24 counting centers. Police officials have been instructed to use minimal power against the peoplewho violate election law.
