Canada's view is not shared by others Prof. Peiris

Canada's decision of sending a low level delegation to the upcoming CHOGM is not shared by any other member country, Minister of External Affairs Prof. G. L. Peiris said.

Addressing media in Colombo this morning, the Minister said Sri Lanka is dismayed by the Canadian attitude.

"Canada is totally isolated in this situation because we have overwhelming support from other countries," the Minister added. He pointed out Prime Minister of Australia attending a same Summit where the Canadian Prime Minister made his announcement disagreed with him on this issue.

Commonwealth is a voluntary association of sovereign countries and there is no justification of whatsoever of some countries to sitting judgments on other countries, the Minister said.

"It is against Commonwealth principles," Prof. Peiris added.

All countries have problems but those issues have to be resolved by the national governments in keeping with the aspirations of the people, the Minister pointed out.

Speaking at the same event, Dr. Mohan Kaul, Chairman, Commonwealth Business Council said Canada's decision would not adversely affect the Business Forum at all.

We do not support Canada's decision, he said.
