Cabinet decisions

 

Government spokesman and Minister Keheliya Rambukwella briefed the media on decisions taken by the Cabinet at its meeting on October 10,1013.

Revision of 2:5 of Chapter VI, 1:5 of Chapter XII and 6:4 of Chapter XXVIII of the Establishments Code

The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday granted approval to make necessary arrangements to recognize the Tele-mail service which has been introduced by the Department of Posts as an alternative to the Telegram service, as a legal document for the purpose of obtaining leave for Public Officers; and to make necessary amendments to the provisions of the Establishments Code accordingly.

Upgrading of Karagahathenna FM Transmission Station of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation

The proposal made by Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Mass Media and Information to upgrade the Karagahathenna FM Transmission Station of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation so that the quality of transmission in the North Central, North Western, Central and Eastern Provinces could be improved to a great extent, was approved by the Cabinet.

Eastern Province Water Supply Development Project

Tender for laying of PE Pipes, Fittings, DI/CI Valves & Accessories for Distribution System of Koneshpuram & Dadayanthalawa Areas - the above project is being implemented by the National Water Supply and Drainage Board with Government of Sri Lanka contribution and funds provided by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). The proposal made by Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Water Supply and Drainage, to award the above tender as recommended by the Standing Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (SCAPC), was approved by the Cabinet.

Provision of Water Supply Facilities for Deyata Klrula 2014

The Deyata Kirula - 2014 Development Program includes Kurunegala, Puttalam and Kegalle Districts and the exhibition is to be held at Kuliyapitiya in lands belonging to the Wayamba University, the Technical College and the Kuliyapitiya Central College. It has been planned to develop drinking water supply within the North Western Province, including the exhibition areas, utilizing funds to be allocated under the Deyata Kirula - 2014 Development Programme. The proposed project will bring direct benefits to the Wayamba University, Kuliyapitiya Technical College and the residential population of the Kuliyapitiya and Kegalle towns and suburbs. The proposal made by Dinesh Gunawardena, Minister of Water Supply and Drainage, to proceed with the relevant activities, was approved by the Cabinet.

Visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to New York, USA for the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

(Prof.) G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, presented the Report to the Cabinet on the above visit of the President. In his address to the General Assembly, the President stressed inter alia, the need to protect and abide by the principle of equal treatment of countries as the bedrock of all international interactions. The President explained the salutary accomplishments of Sri Lanka in the socioeconomic sphere, made despite the 2004 Tsunami, global financial meltdown and a protracted conflict. He also called upon the United Nations to declare an International Skills Day. He stated that the Northern Provincial Council Election was held after the lapse of almost a quarter of century and emphasized its importance in the context of political empowerment and reconciliation and stressed that it is clearly the responsibility of the international communities to assist with these efforts and ensure their success for the benefit of all the people in the country. The President in conclusion, referred to the disproportionate emphasis on Sri Lanka and the unequal treatment through the multilateral framework while questioning the basis for this relentless pursuit despite the country's consistent engagement with the UN mechanisms and the visible progress made.
