President Mahinda Rajapaksa who will be the next Chairman of the Commonwealth was handed over a message on behalf of the children of the world, by Sri Lankan children at a perahera and cultural procession held yesterday.
The perahera was held under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and with the participation of diplomats of Commonwealth countries, to educate children about the cultural and social differences of other countries. Around 2,000 students from 53 schools islandwide participated in the procession showcasing the culture of each Commonwealth member country.
The perahera commenced at Royal College, Colombo and concluded at Independence Square. Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Deputy Education Minister Mohan Lal Grero were also present on the occasion.
