Budget – 2014 today


The 67th budget of Sri Lanka is to be presented to the Parliament today (21) by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, stated the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

This is the ninth budget presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Finance and Planning Minister.

President Rajapaksa who assumed office as the fifth Executive President on November 19, 2005, presented his first budget in the same year. Of the 67 budgets presented in post independence Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been fortunate to present nine budgets in a row, inclusive of today’s budget.

Budget 2014 with more than fifty far reaching proposals aiming at further reducing poverty, improving infrastructure facilities, increasing efficiency among the state and the private sectors and providing long term concessions to the people is a another millstone in fulfilling the economic aspirations of the people in terms of the “Mahinda Chinthanaya” forward vision policy framework.

“It is also expected to contain fiscal proposals that will accelerate the post - war development drive and consolidate the firm economic foundation laid by the eight previous budgets presented by the President,” Finance Ministry sources said. This is the budget with the highest number of proposals forwarded by members of the public, civil society, trade unions, youth organizations, business and professional bodies included.

According to Finance Ministry sources, Budget 2014 will be looking at bringing down the deficit to 5.2 percent from 6.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

The debate on the second reading of the Budget will commence the following day and continue until November 29. The Committee Stage debate of the Appropriation Bill will continue until December 20. The final vote on the Budget will be taken on December 20.
