Vast progress in Jaffna's education sector - President

The education sector in the Jaffna region has seen tremendous development, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

"We are proud of this achievement after the liberation of the entire area from the clutches of LTTE terrorists," he said.

President Rajapaksa said this achievement has been made in an area where persons with arms were hovering, before the elimination of terrorism by the government.

The President said this is the result of unwavering commitment of the government.

"This is not the result of the efforts of LTTE terrorists nor the Tamil National Alliance," he said.

President Rajapaksa said that nothing can be achieved by promoting racism and colonialism. "We should build the country together irrespective of racial and other differences," he said.

The President was addressing a gathering at the Wijithamuni Soyza Cultural Hall after opening the new building complex of the Bibila Pradeshiya Sabha.

President Rajapaksa said the people who were living in terrorist threatened villages in the Moneragala district were in fear of LTTE terrorists.

"The education of their children collapsed due to terrorism," he added.

He said the government stabilized peace in the country and the people were living without fear today.

President Rajapaksa noted that solutions should be found within the village to problems of the rural community.

"The people in the Moneragala district were a great strength to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party when it collapsed in other areas in the country at the 2002 General election," he said.

"We will not hesitate to fulfill what is required to the people in this region." The President added that malnutrition in the region which was 39 percent four years ago has dropped to 17 percent.

President Rajapaksa also said that the Uva Wellassa region was the backbone of the country's economy earlier.

There was an era in which these districts were branded as poverty stricken areas, he said. The Uva Wellassa region was later branded as the most rural part of the country where malnutrition and poverty was high, he said. He also stressed the importance of cultivating moral values among the younger generation.

He said the Moneragala district is being rapidly developed today.

"Roads have been carpeted and people have received electricity and pipe borne water facilities." The President said the entire Uva Wellassa region was brought under a massive development drive by the government.

"We are aware of the capabilities of the people in the Wellassa region. The entire area was brought under a comprehensive development drive to unearth immense potential of the people for the development of the region and the country," he said.

President Rajapaksa added that the people in the region and the country feel the results of this development endeavour.

He said the government ended the era in which essential food items were exported.

"Paddy and maize production in the region increased by 80 percent and 53.3 percent. These are historical achievements," he said.

President Rajapaksa said the people in the region benefited by these achievements. He said the people in the Moneragala district will benefit from the construction of the Mattala International Airport and Hambantota and Oluvil Ports. He added that the unemployment has dropped due to the government's endeavours.
