Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly arrives in Sri Lanka

Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq arrived in Sri Lanka Thursday on a two days official visit, on an invitation extended by his Sri Lankan counterpart Chamal Rajapaksa, the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo said in a release.

The invitation to Pakistan's Speaker was conveyed by the Deputy Speaker of Sri Lankan Parliament Chandima Weerakkody, during his recent visit to Pakistan.

The visit of Speaker Sadiq will further strengthen the friendship between the two countries, the High Commission said.

During his short stay in Colombo Pakistani Speaker, who is heading to Male, Maldives to attend the 7th SAARC Speaker Conference, will call on his Sri Lankan counterpart and observe the ongoing proceedings of Sri Lanka parliament.

The visiting Speaker will also hold a meeting with members of Sri Lanka-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Association and attend a luncheon hosted by the Association in his honor.

The Association, a multi-party caucus of 42 members established in Colombo in November 2007 under the chairmanship of the Speaker of Sri Lanka parliament, is bi-partisan and includes members from almost all political parties.

A similar Sri Lanka-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group has also been established in the National Assembly of Pakistan with the Speaker as its President.

The formation of parliamentary Friendship Associations in the national parliaments is another manifestation of cordiality and multifaceted nature of bilateral relations between the two countries, according to the High Commission of Pakistan.
