Coast Guard educates fishermen in lifesaving

Sri Lanka Coast Guard has conducted an awareness program for the fisherman in life saving and survival techniques.

Coast Guard personnel attached to Southern Region 'Rohana' at Mirissa conducted a lifesaving awareness programme for fishermen in Kottegoda Lunukalapuwa area on Tuesday (31st December 2013).

Over 50 fishermen participated in the programme which aims at minimizing the drowning accidents in sea.

The programme enlightened the fishermen on safety conditions of fishing boats, proper use of safety gears, life saving techniques and survival at sea.

Over 1,200 people die annually in Sri Lanka by drowning in seas and inland waters due to lack of awareness in safety matters and negligence, the Coast Guard says.

The fishermen were also educated on the repercussions of engaging in human smuggling, drug trafficking and vulnerability in taking sea passage to Australia .
