An extensive project to modernize main railway stations in the island is in progress. Under the program Galle, Colombo Fort, Maradana, Ragama, Veyangoda, Gampaha, Peradeniya, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa railway stations will be modernised, Railway Department Planning Director Wijaya Samarasinhe said. Proposed improvements include constructions of commuter waiting rooms with adequate accommodation and space, separate rest rooms for clergy, laity, local and foreign tourists with electricity, water and sanitation facilities, improved public address systems with sophisticated modern equipment with audio and visual facilities, tiled platforms and overhead bridges as well.
According to Samarasinghe, Kandy and Peradeniya railway stations have already been developed.
All these modernisation activities of identified railway stations are expected to be completed by the end of this year, the Railway Planning Director said.
The provision of better facilities for railway commuters would be the main objective of these improvement projects, he added.
On the instructions of Transport Minister Kumara Welgama and under the supervision of General Manager of Railways B. A. P. Ariyarathne, these modernisation projects have got underway, Planning Director of Sri Lanka Railways Samarasinghe said.
