A tweet from the official Twitter account of the US Embassy, accompanied by an image of US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele Sison and US Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice Stephen Rapp standing on St. Anthany's Ground, had carried a baseless allegation yesterday (9th January).
The allegation therein that the Sri Lanka Army shelling had killed hundreds of families at St Antony's Ground, Iranapallai is completely baseless. According to people who live in that area the LTTE had used this ground as a place to handover dead bodies of their cadre who succumbed to injuries received during fighting. If this place was not safe the LTTE would never have used it for that purpose. They also confirm that there never was an incident of shelling on this ground when civilians were present.
It is surprising to see a baseless allegation of this nature being released by the US Embassy without any credible verification. Although the reason for this release is best known to them, this could be part of a much larger campaign that they intend launching in the near future.
It could also be an attempt to give credence to otherwise baseless allegations that have been propagated by some governments and separatist elements with the support of some international media organizations.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army yesterday denied accusations of a Right Reverend Bishop that unconventional weapons, including cluster bombs were used in the last stage of the humanitarian operation.
Responding to the baseless allegation, military spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that, “this allegation is totally baseless and I would like to clarify that the Sri Lanka Army at no point in its history of counter terrorist operations has used unconventional weapons and the weapons used by the Army were internationally accepted conventional weapons”.
“On the other hand, Sri Lanka Air Force had never carried out any indiscriminate aerial bombing and the targeting process was supported by UAVs that captured very clear pictures of the targeted area”. He explained.
“The LTTE camps and localities targeted were engaged only after a careful verification”. He also said.
Further Brig. Wanigasuriya said that, “this report from the north is another proof that some separatist elements who strive to ensure that Sri Lanka remains under international pressure, probably with the intention of having guaranteed support from their host countries, have been able to feed dignitaries of high standing with incorrect and completely baseless information.
