Foreign funds only for development activities - President

Funds obtained from foreign loans will be utilized only for development activities, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday (16).
The President said so at the commissioning of the newly constructed Veyangoda flyover.

The Veyangoda flyover was constructed as a remedy to the long-standing traffic congestion at the Veyangoda level crossing under the Sundara Gampaha program of the government's Mahinda Chinthana future vision.

The flyover is the fourth in the Gampaha District and has been built at a cost of Rs. 2,000 million on the Nittambuwa-Katunayake main road. President Rajapaksa said the flyover is a long felt need of Veyangoda town.

He said there had been many industries in the area in the past but not a single lasted due to the negligence of the then political leaders.

"Veyangoda area has seen rapid development under the present government. An entry point to the proposed highway will be constructed at Veyangoda," the President said.

President Rajapaksa instructed Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa to immediately complete the requirement of a playground for Veyangoda. "Development activities are in progress throughout the country. Electricity and other infrastructure facilities have been provided even to houses in Jaffna," the President said.

He said human rights allegations are levelled against the government due to the eradication of three decades of terrorism.

"If terrorism was not ended, there would not be any human right allegations as some want to have such conflicts."

He said when developing the country various segments sling mud at the government. "This is their nature. The government does not take theses mud slinging campaigns seriously."

President Rajapaksa said the year five scholarship examination will be held as usual but moves will be taken to reduce the burden of the Grade Five examination.

The flyover ends the long road traffic delay caused by the movement of trains throughout the day.

Traffic jams are frequent at Veyangoda when the road is closed for train movement. According to statistics, the road is closed 96 times a day causing a severe traffic congestion. The construction work of the flyover began on September 23, 2012.

The total length of the flyover from the entry point is 700 metres. The flyover comprises two lanes, each three and a half metres in width. On either side of the flyover are two pavements, one and half metres in width each for pedestrians.

This is the first flyover in the country constructed with lanes for pedestrians. The Spanish government provided financial assistance for the project.

A significant feature is that the new flyover is an entry point to the proposed Northern Expressway. It is also the main road used by those travelling to the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake from the Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces.

The President is also scheduled to commission an office complex at the Attanagalla Pradesiya Sabha today. The complex has been constructed at a cost of Rs 100 million.
