SLN facilitates fishermen exchange with India

Sri Lanka Navy yesterday assisted the exchange of fishermen released from Indian and Sri Lankan jails in accordance with the agreement reached Wednesday by the governments of the two countries.

The Sri Lankan Navy handed over 51 Indian fishermen released by Sri Lanka to the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Vishwast at the International Maritime Boundary Line off Kankasanthurei on Thursday (January 16).

The ICG ship Vishwast brought 52 Sri Lankan fishermen released from the Puzhal prison in Chennai and handed them over to Sri Lankan Navy in exchange.

Although it was scheduled to hand over 52 Indian fishermen, one of the fishermen has fallen ill and hospitalized in Jaffna.

Sri Lanka Navy Ship Shakthi assisted by Sri Lanka Coast Guard vessels, CG 43 and CG 46 was deployed for the humanitarian mission.
The transfer is a result of the ministerial level discussions the two countries had in New Delhi Wednesday on the fishermen's issue ahead of the fishermen level talks to be taken place on January 20.
